]]> 0 Dear Monsanto, It’s Me Not You Fri, 24 May 2013 21:35:40 +0000 Laura Dear Monsanto,

I just want to start by saying how much you’ve been in my life over the years but the truth is I’ve met a farmer. His name is Bob and I knew the moment I met him at the farmer’s market that his food was for me. For starters his food doesn’t make my gut ache. I know, I know. You told me my gut would get accustomed to that strange DNA in the GMOs you made, but I just couldn’t get used to it.

When I said I needed some time to think, it hurt you, especially in your pocket, but you’ll get over it because you have a lot of money. From time to time my mind would drift to you and your GMOs, but I was having so much fun eating local and organic food, meeting other farmers and artisans, visiting local farm stores, and meeting people at the co-op. I thought you were having fun too fighting GMO labeling, keeping to your mantra of “profits first,” and suing farmers.

I’m only telling you this because I don’t want it to be such a shock when you see me at the March Against Monsanto tomorrow. I’m quite taken with this local and organic food movement, Monsanto, and I’ve never been happier! It is understandable of course if you can’t bear to see me there. I know this may be harsh, but I’m way too good for you.

I’m sure you still have someone who enjoys your GMO seeds, who likes their food sprayed with your Roundup herbicide–but I’m afraid we have to go our separate ways. I hope this hasn’t ruined your day.

It’s not you, it’s me. I need to be happy and healthy. And I like it the natural way.

Forever, Laura

5 Reasons To Eat Insects Mon, 13 May 2013 21:43:43 +0000 Laura Holy cow! Can eating insects help save the world? Food Adventurer Stefan Gates thinks so and talks about insect-eating benefits in his new documentary Can Eating Insects Save the World?

According to Gates the 5 reasons to eat insects are:

 1. There are no emotional strings attached
 2. Insects are very nutritious
 3. Insects as food offer a great variety of flavor and texture
 4. Sustainability–their capacity to endure is evident to any human being that has encountered them
 5. If we were willing to eat them, we could end world hunger

Hmmm. I just don’t know if I could do it. I like the idea of solving world hunger, but those guys don’t look very appetizing to me.

What do you think? Would you be willing to make the switch to insects?

Polly’s Incredible Goat Birth Wed, 08 May 2013 21:39:31 +0000 Laura This is the story of Polly, the Nigerian Dwarf goat, and her first time giving birth with all the trials and tribulations of labor and the drama of passing out. The best part is her owner reenacting the drama that unfolded after the sun went down and it was too dark to take any more pictures.

Don’t Touch Me–I’m About To Have A Cow!

DaNelle of Weed ‘Em & Reap chronicles Polly’s labor and goat birth when she starts by freaking out, not wanting to be touched and finally getting up, then down, up–then down.

So I did what any other goat owner would do to her goat who is about to give birth but is being all dramatic and doesn’t want you to touch her…
I took about a hundred close up shots of her face.
You know, so she can remember this special day and how beautiful she looked.

When the sun went down DaNelle kindly showed us what happened next…

I will be playing myself & Polly.
Because I’m cool like that.
It was literally FREEZING that day. I think I was wearing 2 pants, 2 jackets, a scarf, a blanket & a full size sleeping bag. It was THAT cold.
Polly started getting louder and louder and I could tell she was pushing because she’d stretch her head up really high.

Read more of DaNelle’s hilarious recounting of Polly’s first goat birth. The best part for us was finding out that the milk from Nigerian Dwarf goats is not only RAW, but tastes just like cow’s milk. Cool!

If you’re interesting in raising your own goats and getting the benefits of raw milk, read DaNelle’s Goat Guide 101 on raising and milking goats.
