Wow! Lion meat tacos? After a social media storm, death threats to the owner, and a lot of very angry Facebook comments, Taco Fusion of Tampa, Florida has pulled lion meat tacos from their menu.
The lion meat comes from lions that are raised for food and not killed in the wild and is legal in the US. So why are people more “okay” with bear or ostrich or bison, but not lion? I have to admit to also having a strong and negative reaction to lion meat tacos. I think for me it has to do with a fear that the popularity of lion meat might mean the disappearance of these beautiful animals. In the wild lions are considered “threatened” which is one step away from endangered. I know they’re not cuddly–it’s not about that. It’s about what happens when something becomes very popular and people are willing to pay a lot of money for it. Taco Fusion was charging $35 per taco and it was selling well!
Are you okay with eating farm-raised lion meat? What about other types of exotic meats–do you think we’ll be seeing more of these on restaurant menus?
