Eating Local & Organic » sustainability It's time to take back our food, medicine and farms! Thu, 08 Aug 2013 18:59:13 +0000 en-US hourly 1 Sustainable Farms Do It Better Tue, 02 Jul 2013 20:34:27 +0000 Laura This film from Anna Lappe and Food Myth Busters debunks the myth that we need industrial agriculture to feed the world. We’re talking about BigAg here–with all the monoculture crops, GMOs, feedlots and chemical fertilizers. They’d like us to believe that there’s is the only way the world can be fed, but Food Myth Busters shows us that sustainable farms do as well, and even better during droughts, than industrial agriculture farms.

Tue, 14 May 2013 22:48:18 +0000 Laura You might already know what homesteading is (whether it’s on a mountain or in a prairie), but do you know what a city homestead is? These days a lot of people are getting more interested in being self-sufficient and growing their own food. Some even make their own food staples like ricotta cheese, broths and soups because it’s the only way to control what’s in them and how they’re made. An city homestead is about this kind of simple, sustainable life–in the city. Yes, if you have even a little bit of room and you live in the city, you can be a city homesteader.

There’s a huge sense of satisfaction in knowing that you’re able to grow your own food. Even if you’re just able to do a little bit of growing–it’s worth it. Growing your own herbs, for instance, is a big savings and you’ll know when you cook with them that they couldn’t get any fresher!

5 Reasons To Eat Insects Mon, 13 May 2013 21:43:43 +0000 Laura Holy cow! Can eating insects help save the world? Food Adventurer Stefan Gates thinks so and talks about insect-eating benefits in his new documentary Can Eating Insects Save the World?

According to Gates the 5 reasons to eat insects are:

  1. There are no emotional strings attached
  2. Insects are very nutritious
  3. Insects as food offer a great variety of flavor and texture
  4. Sustainability–their capacity to endure is evident to any human being that has encountered them
  5. If we were willing to eat them, we could end world hunger

Hmmm. I just don’t know if I could do it. I like the idea of solving world hunger, but those guys don’t look very appetizing to me.

What do you think? Would you be willing to make the switch to insects?
